Have you ever said something and gotten a blank look because the listener didn’t know the word you used? I seem to do this at least once a year and it’s a frustrating experience for both me and them.
I find it frustrating because I’m not trying to be pretentious – I just happen to enjoy reading dictionaries (and yes I mean that literally!) and love words. They find it frustrating because it’s unpleasant being made to feel stupid by someone in conversation. I certainly don’t mean to do that to anyone – it’s always accidental.
My guilt is often assuaged though, by reflecting that the word obviously needed to be taken out for a spin. If words drop out of the spoken language and become written only, they usually then slip out of use all together so if I can keep a word alive a little longer I feel good about that!
Some words should be spoken I think just for how lovely they sound… I love ‘assuage’ and I love ‘mellifluous’. ‘Crinkle’ is nice too… but I guess I’d be here for hours if I listed all the ones I like.
Do you have a word you just love saying out loud?
