I’ve been wondering about the origins of OK for a long time. I had a sense it was an abbreviation, but of what?
The origins are a bit uncertain, but the leading theory is as follows:
During the mid 18oos in the USA there was a fashion for creating humorous acronyms for everyday phrases (e.g. NS for ’nuff said). Many were of the kind of misspellings used by newspaper humourists at the time (e.g. OW for oll wright).
OK stood for oll korrect, and this then became a nationally recognisable acronym through coverage of an electoral campaign where it was used by one of the candidates.
This is a really interesting origin… but what struck me most about it was the use of acronyms for common phases.
OMG remind you of anything you’ve LOL’d over recently?
