For the past few months I’ve been working with a playwrite. Not on any works of fiction – we just happen to belong to the same profession – but it does provide an opportunity to talk about writing.
His greatest frustration at the moment is that the play he’s most passionate about trying to finish and get into production is in a style completely unfashionable at the current time.
I know at least one writer who’s had exactly this problem with a novel, and it always seems the most unfair thing about the business of word-smithing. To know that fashion is the ‘only’ thing standing in your way.
The good thing, I suppose, is that fashions change and repeat, so maybe at some point in the future these projects will find ‘their time’.
