All of us spend long hours at the computer, so here are a few things specifically to remember when you’re doing those long sessions:
- Get up and stretch regularly. Unsatisfied with a paragraph? Searching for the perfect word? Then get up and stroll around the room a bit with a good, gentle shoulder stretch as you go.
- Over the day, find ways to make small adjustments to the way you sit, so none of your muscles are being held in the one position all day. This might be moving your keyboard a little closer for a while, or adding/removing a thin cushion.
The reason for both these suggestions is that the horrible tension knots we get in our muscles often come from holding a muscle in the same position for too long. You need to contract and stretch a muscle to stop knots from forming.
