Have you ever had that experience of knowing something, but not really having stopped to think about it? Well, this was a recent one of mine…
In a conversation at work about differences between Australia and New Zealand, my boss suddenly said something about Australia being a Latin word and how it was funny that it just means south.
Ignoring the fact that the Latin word is actually australis meaning southern, it was strange to have that moment where I realised we live in a country called “Southern”. Despite knowing that Terra Australis meant Southern Land I’d never really thought it through to that conclusion.
So hi from Southernia!
And just because I’m a word-nerd… it’s interesting in its own way that australis comes from auster – the south wind.
