A few weeks ago I started reading a book that I’d bought cheap in one of my attempts to broaden my fiction reading. I do this when I see a 5 books for $x deal, and usually it means I grab a few crime / thriller novels and maybe some chick lit.
This last haul included a fantasy novel and that was the one I’d come to. The first paragraph or two had me pulling faces. Not that the writing was bad exactly, just… well… a little simple. It made me wonder if I was going to make it through a whole chunky-sized novel of the same.
Then, on page two I came to a fight scene which was one of those where I skip ahead because I don’t really care about who’s kicking-arse how. I just need to know if the protagonist gets injured or if there’s any foreshadowing etc threaded through the ‘bad guy x died this way’ stuff. More face pulling.
But, I have to say that by page 4 I was immersed. Completely just floating along on the words, my mind full of images of places and happenings.
I can’t even tell you exactly how it was that went from unimpressed to immersed. It was one of those nice slides into story that sometimes happen. The writing hasn’t gotten any better and the action sequences are still annoying, but that some how stopped mattering so much, as I began to connect with the characters and enjoy the world.
