Recently, in a conversation, I came across someone who didn’t know what a television set was. They guessed it might be another term for a television, but they weren’t sure.
My first instinct in explaining why it was originally a television set was that a radio was a radio set. The set was the physical thing – the delivery method – but radio or television was thing being delivered.
These days ‘radio’ and ‘television’ combine both ideas. All because we really love abbreviating.
