Not long ago I had a chuckle at an online commenter who mis-used the following phrase:
Not failing to disappoint.
They had used it to mean ‘never disappoints’. Chuckles were many.
Then today, I saw it again and it was mis-used in exactly the same way. Now, out of the entire english speaking internet, two people don’t make a trend. Having said that, the internet tends to reflect trends in language so I’m a little disturbed.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a big stickler for language being static, but I do draw the line at phrases being used in ways that absolutely make no sense.
Is the word ‘failing’ invisible? Hmm…
