In catching up on my blog reading, I saw this post over at Sofie Bird’s site about a new approach to interactive books. The idea being an electronic book in which the story progresses while you aren’t looking. (Kind of a like a choose-your-own-adventure book except you aren’t really choosing, the book is reacting to your actions.)
Sofie goes on to talk about the problems posed to authors by this format, and I have to agree that I think it’s a trip into insanity. Having said that, it did get me thinking about how interesting it would be to read a book like that, and try to discuss it with other readers, given you’ve essentially read different books.
In a world where so many people play WoW and similar – which are branching narratives – I can definitely see a market forming around this idea. Like the old choose-your-own-adventures, though, I imagine the format would require simple story writing.
