I’ve been reflecting a lot on favourite movies recently and I thought I might mention a few of them here and why I like them. Maybe you like them too. Maybe not!
To kick off, I thought I’d start with a movie that I’ve seen quite a few times over the years, and always enjoy: The 5th Element
To people who’ve not seen this, I usually describe it as Die Hard in space, but funnier. It has Bruce Willis playing exactly that embittered hard-man character that he’s famous for and there’s lots of wry humour and gunfire.
It is also set in a richly imagined future and because Gaultier designed the costumes, it has a look like no other sci fi movie.
It does border on silly – particularly Chris Rock screeching like a hysterical chipmunk – and the plot is the same as almost any damsel in distress / end of the world / action hero movie, but those aren’t things that bother me personally.
Visually stunning. Quite funny. Fast paced. Good worldbuilding. Good script. Good acting.
What more can you ask for?
