It’s the time of year when writerly types of my acquaintance start pondering whether they’ll have a bash at the yearly round of workshops and challenges. In particular, the ubiquitous NaNoWriMo seems to be featuring prominently in people’s minds.
I’m a firm believer in challenging yourself because you’re likely to learn a lot about your writing if you do. So I will wish everyone luck with their words, whatever the challenge is.
My personal preference is for doing only challenges that I know I have hope of completing without exhausting myself. That was insight gained from finding myself in a writing slump after a successful NaNo, and wondering if I’d really needed to put myself through the pain!
But like I say, it’s healthy to try yourself in the fire of a challenge at least once…unless you’re a deadline-a-phobe, in which case, maybe not.
