Studio Ghibli films are always beautiful and strange and magical. This one is without doubt the most complex in terms of story and world-building, and though it looks like a fantasy it is really a sci-fi film.
A war-torn, post-apocalyptic world where there is an ongoing battle against ‘spores’, but also with rich, distinct cultural groups and a range of wonderful ‘alien’ creatures and technologies. It would make an amazing novel.
