As most writers will tell you, if you mention that you write to non-writers there are a few very predictable responses. Most common seems to be ‘have you been published?’ though if you’d asked me a few years ago I’d have said the most common was ‘I’ve always wanted to write a novel’.
And if you’re a sci fi writer you can be almost guaranteed to see the listener lose interest the moment you say you write that genre. Unless of course they’re a fan.
So, it was quite refreshing that when I invited some colleagues to help me celebrate having finished the ‘blurt’ in what really is a record time for me, they not only asked what it was about, but also remained interested even after I said it was sci-fi!
I think I’m still pleasantly in shock.
