As a rule, Jimmy Stewart annoys me, but that’s not to say he wasn’t a fine actor. I think he puts in a great performance in this film as a scientist who tries to prevent a plane from crashing when no one else believes the plane will crash.
What makes this a memorable film though is that he wasn’t just cast as some socially inept boffin on a mission. He’s a single dad, with a teenage daughter, who is struggling to do the right thing and not hurt her or others who care for him.
Marlene Dietrich also does a wonderful turn playing a movie star who comes to the scientist’s defense.
