If you’ve ever experienced good mulled wine then you probably have warm, happy feelings when you hear “mull”, but isn’t it an odd word?
To mull something is actually to grind or pulverize it, which may or may not have something to do with spices in mulled wine (okay that’s just my theory so probably not).
When we say we’re going to ‘mull it over’ we are actually talking about sort of grinding an idea. I like to think this was because, before engines, grinding anything was a slow process whether it was hand, water or donkey powered. I could be wrong about that too, but it’s a nice thought.
