I’ve seen a couple of fantastic language ‘fails’ recently. My top 3 are as follows:
3. For trying to make a conservative statement that would none-the-less sound really important and powerful:
Australian scientists have helped discover what could be one of the only known causes of motor neuron disease.
So they’ve discovered what could be a cause. It might also be the only known cause, if it is a cause. But we don’t want to say that so we’ll say it ‘could be one of the only known causes’. Whaaa?
2. For the fact it’s on a shop window in large print:
WE SALE FRESH FISH
1. For the fact it appeared in a job ad:
Must have excellent negating skills.
I’m still laughing my head off at that last one.
