I can never spell despondent properly. It just ends with -ant in my mind and I can’t tell you why.
Anyway, over the years I’ve noticed that the spell checker in MSWord suggests something kind of odd as a replacement: despond ant
This is a suggested replacement I’ve looked at many times and gone “what the?” but it was only recently that I really saw it for the first time and the fact that this was the top suggestion. So then I realised that “despond” is a word.
Okay I probably should have realised that from “despondent” right? But I hadn’t. So then I looked it up.
It is both a verb and a noun which you could define, respectively, as to become despondent and to be despondent – at least in the way we currently use despondent.
How is it that such a useful verb has dropped out of usage?
And why does MSWord’s spell checker think that an ant might despond?
