I just finished reading The Hobbit again. It’s one of those books that I always enjoy, but have to be in the right frame of mind to read.
Such and adventure! Such a wonderful character in Bilbo. The truth is though, that I enjoy the story a lot more than I enjoy the prose.
So when I read The Hobbit, for the most part, I picture small children sitting at my feet listening. That makes the prose work.
Going back to Bilbo. I love him as a character. His strength and ingenuity being qualities he has without realising it. He’s wise and has the sort of innate sense of justice that I enjoy in a character, but he’s not cocky or all that sure of himself.
