Hitchcock made a lot of fine films so it’s not a surprise that at least one (well, in fact two) have made it onto my favourites list. The 39 Steps is wonderful – though a little dated in parts – with a great story and some great humour.
I think it says something about the attraction of the story in the original book-form that no less than 3 movies have been made of it since 1935 when Hitchcock put his spin on it.
My favourite thing about this film though is the way the thriller unfolds. A bit of co-incidence, a enough information to let you guess what’s happening just ahead of the characters and some interesting story choices give you something you rarely get in cinema today. You don’t feel manipulated because Hitchcock is doing it with such flair!
And you have to love chases that take place on trains…
