I apologise in advance to anyone who has read Gone Girl and liked it. I didn’t. I really, really, really didn’t.
Now it’s a tough book to talk about without spoiling the surprises so I’m going to have to keep to general comments, but what I didn’t like runs something like this:
- Co-incidence, co-incidence and convenience
- Sociopaths don’t do that
- Since when was anyone that perfect? And lucky
I’ll add that this book had the usual problem of a cast of unlikable characters who I didn’t care about because they were obnoxious. Also, using fake rape allegations as a trope is problematic to me.
Right, I think I’ve made my point.
What I will say in its favour – and I can only assume is why this has been such a popular book – is that it is well written and it is definitely a fascinating premise for a novel.
I can’t wait for the next book club meeting to hear what everyone else thought.
