So, about a year ago the Blurt came into the world as a messy, silly flow of words. By around 40K I’d got a complete story down and was slightly awed by the writing demon’s stamina.
It is now my edit-in-progress as I try to bang it into a proper 1st draft. What’s been curious about this is finding that, when I was distracted by speed and volume, my writing demon was sneaking around adding all this complexity to the world without me noticing.
My first challenge with the edit has been, therefore, to make sense of all this extra stuff. Work out how it fits into the world not just at the moment where it’s mentioned, but before and after too. I started on paper. I’ve now graduated to a spreadsheet.
Meanwhile the demon is buffing his talons, smoothing his wings and generally looking pleased with himself. I get the impression he finds it amusing that I only just noticed what he’d done.
