So, you may remember that I had some issues with Gone Girl and was looking forward to hearing what my bookclub pals thought of it. Well it was very interesting.
Despite the fact that most readers found the first half a little bit of a slog, thought the main characters were pretty unlikable and even found events pretty far-fetched, they all enjoyed it as a read. When I asked them why, they said because it was a ‘page turner’ and a the ‘thriller’ story kept them intrigued and wanting to know what happened.
A testament to the appeal of mystery!
I was interested that they found it a ‘page turner’. I wouldn’t have described it that way myself, but I guess there was enough intrigue all the way through to lead the reader on; giving it the ‘page turner’ feel. And the writing didn’t get in the way.
Another curious point was that no one felt compelled to seek out anything more by this author. It definitely didn’t end up in anyones ‘love’ category, but we’ll probably all go see the movie now just to satisfy our curiousity as to how they’re going to adapt it.
