As I finish edits to the sci fi novel and start another round of proofing, one of the things I’ve been reflecting on are tics. Those little writing habits that I can’t always see for myself.
With this novel, I’d previously worked hard at getting rid of a few, but the recent feedback picked out another big one. I was surprised all over again at how invisible these things can be!
Like for my favourite typos and spelling gaffs, I have a list of tics. The only difference between the tics list and the misspellings list, is that I find tics are often specific to a novel. Something about the nature of the story seems to drive which tics crop up, and that interests me a lot.
In the case of the sci fi novel, some tics also reflect an earlier writing style, because even having done a re-write, that style informed the re-write.
I wonder if my beta-readers will find any more?
