There are some things that make me cry easily. One of which is other people’s distress, and I got an unexpected dose of it recently. During a radio doco on something else entirely, they played the recording of Herbert Morrison reporting on the arrival of the Hindenburg in New Jersey.
The film footage of the airship bursting into flames I’ve seen quite a few times, without weeping, but the sheer distress in Morrison’s voice got me. I’d heard some of it before too, yet I found hearing it in full harrowing.
There really is such a thing as too much empathy!
