Well, I missed the start of Lent for this post, but it was while I munched pancakes on Shrove Tuesday that I began to wonder about all the Lent and pre-Lent traditions and the accompanying vocabulary.
Personally I’ve always loved ‘shrive’, ‘shrove’ and ‘shriven’. One of those words I wish we could put back into use, because it’s just fun to say!
But my fun find was the origin of the word carnival (well, the most common one stated) which is that it comes from the Latin for putting away/removing meat (carne + levare). Not coming from a country with a pre-Lent carnivale tradition, it was quite a surprise to make the association from the idea of a carnival to when carnivale is held to the word itself.
