A while ago, I told you how much I enjoyed a book called Three Parts Dead. One of the things I loved about it, was the huge and fascinating world in the background. A friend I’d recommended it to also liked this about it and we recently had a good chat about this.
Then, I watched John Wick and discovered a similar thing. The world of this film is really interesting and the directors don’t explain it, they just present it as reality, which I love.
The difference between how much I enjoyed Three Parts Dead (heaps) and John Wick (somewhat less), was that the book had a story that was firmly in the world, but the movie had a standard “hit-man-on-a-revenge-spree” story happening against the backdrop of the world.
I came away from John Wick wanting to write a story in the world!
By the way, if you like action movies, of the pure-perfect-killer revenge plot kind, you might enjoy this film. The choreography of the action is very cool and Keanu Reeves does all his own driving and stunts, which gives it a different feel to a lot of action films.
I also liked the female antagonist in this, because she is just mean! And I loved the cars (but that’s just me). Plus, it was nice to see Mr Reeves playing a bad man for a change. But I warn you; a PUPPY DIES. You don’t see it, but there is a beagle puppy murdered. There, you’re warned.
