This is a movie that didn’t get a lot of play where I live, but it is a lovely film. Unlike the other G rated titles that made my favourites list, this one probably has less in it for adults, and yet it does so much that most kids films don’t.
Positive messages of all kinds abound and the relationships are genuine in their portrayal. Its characters are all interesting and the fact it’s about a spelling bee almost gets lost in all the strands of the story – though it is kind of interesting in itself.
Akeela as a character is full of doubts and self-limiting attitudes, but she’s also a caring, conscientious girl. A cut above most female leads in movies and I’d say that goes double for most live-action kids films.
Wonderful performances too, on the whole.
