I really like Johnny Depp as an actor and he’s done a lot of films. Films of all kinds too…
From the seemingly mandatory early career horror (Nightmare on Elm Street) and smutty comedy (Private Resort), through a bunch of quirky little flicks (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Benny and Joon & Don Juan Demarco) via some seriously famous flicks (Platoon, Edward Sissorhands, Chocolat & Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and onto the blockbuster (Pirates of the Caribbean franchise), it’s a broad career.
And he’s known most widely for the wacky characters (Edward Sissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger & Mordecai), but he’s done nearly as many biopics (Ed Wood, Donnie Brasco, Public Enemies, Finding Neverland, Blow, The Libertine). He’s also done quite a few straight roles (Secret Window, The Astronaut’s Wife, Chocolat, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Dead Man, Nick of Time, The Ninth Gate, From Hell, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Rum Diaries, The Tourist & Transendence), though some of those movies are a little quirky!
My favourites out of this varied body of work would have to be Don Juan Demarco (about a shrink trying to treat a young man who thinks he’s Don Juan), From Hell (a take on Jack the Ripper), Donnie Brasco (about a cop undercover with the mob), Cry Baby (a musical comedy about juvenile delinquents) and Pirates of the Carribean (because I love Captain Jack Sparrow).
