Clapped-out is one of those terms I’ve always know and used, but never thought about the words. I got a double surprise when I stumbled on an origin for it, realising I’d never wondered about how clapping related to breaking down/wearing out and then finding that it’s all about hares!
Apparently, when hares pause to catch their breath while fleeing from a predator (like a pack of humans and their dogs) the deep breathing they do makes their front legs move in a way that gives the appearance of clapping. So they were said to be ‘clapped-out’ when they got worn out.
Now that’s an origin story.
