I’ve mentioned that my first completed screenplay came from my usual pantser approach, which was the opposite of what I was learning in class at the time. This got me thinking maybe pants-ing is the way I should go… but I did the course for a reason so not applying what I learnt would be a waste…
The compromise I’ve settled on, is to try the structural approach I was learning for the next screenplay and see how it goes. Mind you I’m a bit scared… I mean what if I like planning? That’s a frightening possibility!
But seriously, the real challenge was to pick a project. I have so many ideas that are languishing in some fragment of a novel somewhere, that it seems nuts to think up something new.
It didn’t take long to realise though, that I have a story which would make a great film. The whole idea of the story is a visual thing so it might even work better as a film! Now I just have to get all my course notes out and start working.
That’ll happen at some point after the end of the WriMoFoFo, because I’m charging ahead on Blurty’s Sister for my final week of the challenge and I would like to get through the draft of that. But I’m excited!
I think, in a weird way, I like the idea of writing screenplays because they’re – compared to a novel – so fast to write. As a writer who is bombarded with story ideas, this is a good thing.
